First, tell us about yourself. I joined EA six years ago, after having worked two decades as a computer scientist in various capacities. At SEED, we explore what interactive entertainment will look like in the longer term.

Trying to guess what the distant future holds has a tendency to become abstract, so we try to be as practical as possible and keep our horizon to technology that we think will impact interactive entertainment three to five years from now.

Our approach is to build functioning prototypes and set up real creative experiences with emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, virtual- and augmented reality, and large-scale dynamic virtual worlds.

One of your latest projects has been to train a self-learning agent to play Battlefield 1 multiplayer. How did that project come about? This was back in , and it got me thinking about how much effort it would take to have a self-learning agent learn to play a modern and more complex first person AAA game like Battlefield.

First we figured out the basics, and built a bare-bones three-dimensional FPS to test our algorithms and train the network. After seeing some good results in our own basic game, we worked with the team at DICE to integrate the agent in a Battlefield environment.

We have conducted playtests, pitting AI agents against human players in a simplified game mode, restricted to handguns. The agent is pretty proficient at the basic Battlefield gameplay, and has taught itself to alter its behavior depending on certain triggers, like being low on ammo or health.

But Battlefield is about so much more than defeating your opponents. We will have to extend the capabilities of the agents further for the AI to be able to crack these nuts. Still, after the playtests, a few participants asked us to clearly mark the agents so that they could be properly distinguished, which to me is a good testament to how well the agents perform and how lifelike they are.

Ideal for holding objectives, especially in Operations. Just remember to use all the weapons you get the anti-vehicle launcher is woefully under-appreciated , and not just the sword. When I first started playing as a Medic I opted to bring the pickaxe as my melee weapon of choice.

Looks savage when you murder an enemy with it, right? Well, perhaps I should have taken the spiked club instead. Because the Medic class - special rifle grenades aside - is useless when faced with a tank.

However, certain melee weapons grant special abilities, which you can use to give your chosen class a little more of a fighting chance. The spiked club, for instance, can be used to damage light vehicles.

Certain knives can cut barbed wire, giving Scouts a better view to snipe from. This one is a little more philosophical than an actual feature, but the teams that win more often than not use squad spawn religiously.

The war for Objective Charlie looks attritional and deadly, so why not hoover up Apples and Butter while everyone is distracted? Approach the objective, stay hidden, and wait a few seconds for your squad to spawn on you.

Did you know you can target specific weapons on a behemoth? Start with the long range stuff like mortars and work down from there. Keep moving, keep spotting targets for allies, and capture objectives if you can.

The Hellriegel has a superb rate of fire and accuracy, so drops enemies very quickly. The Model 10A has ridiculous range for a shot-gun.

Or, for a map with fewer vehicles, take the Rocket gun to wipe out clusters of infantry and bring down buildings. Medic - Go with the Mondragon Storm no optics.

For a more assault focused Medic, take the Incendiary grenades - these do damage AND create a wall of flame that can, again, buy time for you to make revives.

Support - Of all the classes the Support has the least variety when it comes to their primary. Supports with a repair tool are a valuable resource on maps with vehicles, so take one you can also use it to damage enemy vehicles, if you get close enough.

The increased chamber speed and lack of requirement to zoom out between shots makes it an idea two-shot kill weapon. For long range, the Russian sniper is by far the best option. Take a Spot flare gun at all times.

Decoys are fine for long-rangers, but I prefer Tripwire explosives. Ah, the eternal question. Be aggressive, is the simple answer. Aside from that - always aim to own the centre of each map.

Go straight there, right from the start. Control the centre, and you can handle the outer objectives much easier. Finally - get in a tank. Anti-vehicle weaponry is, surprisingly, quite rarely equipped in BF1.

A full crew in a tank or landcruiser can often take and hold objectives for a decisive amount of time before the opposition gets enough of a coordinated attack together to take it out.

Similar to Conquest, you need to be aggressive. It might give you the foothold your team needs to capture the objective. Swap, rinse, repeat.

To be fair, the gameplay also shows instances of the AI bots seemingly goofing around and running around in circles. If an agent spots an objective, like an enemy player, it will act.

Rather it requires players to perform an array of simultaneous actions. So to help the self-learning agent get a head start with basic action combinations, we let it observe 30 minutes of human play—a process called imitation learning—before letting it train on its own.

The agents that we show in our demo have subsequently practiced for six days against versions of itself and some simple old-fashioned bots, playing on several machines in parallel.

In total that equates to roughly days of total gameplay experience. The agent has the same field-of-view as a human player and is assisted by a mini-map. We quickly discovered, however, that Battlefield is too visually complex for the agent to understand, which meant we had to simplify what it sees.

What makes your work stand out from these examples? Well, it depends how you want to play. Taking off the bayonet by heading to the Customise option on your Class loadout screen grants both a quicker weapon draw from running and standing.

However, keeping the bayonet on also has its advantages. Ammo and Medical boxes are stationary but, unlike packs, they can resupply multiple friends at once.

I also wonder if this is the new weapons patch where they all get buffed. I have the same problem since 2 days back, not sure what to do? I had to go in and re check that box. And when the going gets tough, you can rely on Behemoths - Battlefield's biggest and most unique vehicles ever - to turn the tide of battle. Against this dramatic backdrop, the vertical fights between Russia and Austria-Hungary are as bitter as the cold. Behind every gunsight is a human being — experience their stories.
